This is a really cool letterpress project designed and illustrated by Ty Mattson of Mattson Creative to mark the announcement of the birth of his son. The letterpress printing was done by Studio on Fire onto 220lb. Lettra paper. I really love the type, simple colours and attention to detail.

parliament_office 01Parliament are a graphic design/creative agency in Portland, Oregon.

Upon checking out their website you’ll find not only are they a talented and accomplished graphic design/creative agency, they are also not too bad at interior design judging from the photographs of their studio fitout.

The DIY project allowed the team at Parliament, alongside carpenter Kyle Sharp, to create a space that reflected their aesthetic qualities while at the same time utilising salvaged and reclaimed materials such as old pizza ovens, street signs, crates, a 1930’s barn and a 20th century church.

I love the contrast that has been created between the original raw, industrial building shell and the warm character of the new timber elements. The stacked firewood walls are a standout and their collection of screen printed posters is awesome too!

Check out Parliament’s website here.

push your ideas

I found this video while cruising NOTCOT the other week. So inspirational – makes me want to get out my sketchbook, quit my job and become a graphic designer. It covers some useful creative tips for designers of any discipline.

Created by Rory O’sullivan and Simon Bruyn at Rethink Communications, the video was created to promote the 2010 Rethink Scholarship at Langara College in Vancouver, Canada.

The Rethink Scholarship website is just as cool as the video. Check it out here.

65_maproject9I stumbled upon this graphic design project the other month while browsing ffffound! and it really caught my eye.

Designed for his thesis project, Mikey Burton has created an integrated branding campaign based around the illustrative reinterpretation of classic penguin book covers.

I particularly like the Animal Farm cover and its likeness to vintage communist propaganda posters.

Check out more of Mikey Burton’s work at his website here.

alphabet of design classics

It’s never too early to get a little tacker into design!

Designed by Joel Pirela of Blue Ant Studio, the ‘Alphabet of Design Classics’ poster has many of my favourite designers and furniture pieces including Alvar Aalto’s Savoy Vase, the Eames DAX plastic armchair and the Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen. The colours look cool and I really love the detail of the silhouettes.

I’m sure it was originally designed with a child’s bedroom wall in mind but seriously, I think it would look just as good on my wall.

The Alphabet of Design Classics poster is available to order online at the Blue Ant Studio website here.

build_poster

I first saw this poster on the FFFFOUND! blog last month and it instantly caught my eye. The font, the detail of the 2D graphics and the simple use of only grey, black and white all appealed to me. Did I mention that I love the detail of the 2D graphics?

It wasn’t until I went back to look at it today that I realised the word ‘objectified’ is also subtly spelt out amongst the objects (the toothbrush is the J) – cool.

Designed by Michael C. Place of Build, the poster is for a documentary film titled… wait for it… ‘Objectified’ but I’ll leave that for a separate blog entry – here!

You can buy the poster from the Objectified website here.

Monopoly Repackaging

monopoly 1

Monopoly has always been one of my favourite board games. Not just for the chance to be a property tycoon for an afternoon but also for the detail of various elements of the game such as the metal playing pieces, houses and even the money. So when I saw this repackaging project taking the attention to detail to another level, I loved it straight away.

Designed by Graphic Design student Andy Mangold, this reworking of the Monopoly packaging is inspired by expensive boxes of chocolate.

“Monopoly, in spite being the classiest of all board games, unfortunately is packaged just as boringly and uncreatively as every other garbage board game on the shelves. So, I decided to repackage it… turning the class up to 11.

All of the boxes are made out of chocolate brown mat board and skinned in cream arches cover. The final package is just over 10″ x 10″ x 1.5″ and includes smaller containers for all of the various pieces and cards and a laser-cut holder for all of the houses and hotels.”

It would be really cool to see this as the standard edition for sale in shops one day!

Check out Andy Mangold’s website here. (He has a great blog too.)
